ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stephen E. Lucas is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Penn State University.

Professor Lucas is a scholar and a teacher. His first book. The beginnings of Rebellion in Philadelphia. In 1977 he received the Golden Anniversary Award of the National Communication Association and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He wrote The Schism in Rhetorical Scholarship in 1981 and The Renaissance of American Public Address: Text and Context in Rhetorical Criticism in 1988. His most recent book is a book. The top 100 American speeches of a century. The year 2009.

The Chancellor’s Award for excellence in teaching at the University of Wisconsin is one of the awards Professor Lucas has received. His lecture course on The Rhetoric of Campaigns and Revolutions is one of the most popular on campus and has twice been selected for statewide broadcast by Wisconsin Public Radio. Professor Lucas is featured in the History Channel?s documentary on the Declaration of Independence, as well as in the Educational Video Group?s program on the history of American public address.

The introductory public speaking course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been directed by Professor Lucas. He has been responsible for many teaching innovations and has supervised hundreds of graduate assistants. He has participated in public speaking workshops and colloquia at schools throughout the United States, as well as serving as a judge for the major national English-language public speaking competition in China, lectured at numerous Chinese universities, and conducted workshops for Chinese instructors on teaching public speaking.

Stephen Lucas and his wife, Patty, have two sons, Jeff and Ryan. He has interests in travel, sports, art, and photography.
