About the Author

Frank H. Netter was born in New York City. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from New York University in 1931 after studying art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. During his student years, Dr. Netter?s notebook sketches attracted the attention of the medical faculty and other physicians, allowing him to supplement his income by illustrating articles and textbooks. After establishing a surgical practice in 1933, he decided to give up his practice in favor of a full-time commitment to art. During World War II, Dr. Netter was a member of the United States Army. The production of the extraordinary collection of medical art so familiar to physicians and other medical professionals worldwide was the result of this 45 year partnership. The Netter Collection was acquired by Icon Learning Systems in 2000. The Netter Collection was purchased by Elsevier in 2005. The art of Dr. Netter can be found in over 50 publications.

The works of Dr. Netter are some of the best examples of illustration in the teaching of medical concepts. One of the most famous medical works ever published was the Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations. The anatomic paintings from the Netter Collection can be found in the Netter Atlas of Human Anatomy. The atlas is used by medical and health professions students around the world.

The Netter illustrations are appreciated more for their intellectual content than for their aesthetic qualities. The aim and goal of illustration is what Dr. Netter wrote about in 1949. No matter how beautifully painted, how delicately and subtly rendered a subject, it is not worth much as a medical illustration if it does not make clear a medical point. Dr. Netter?s planning, conception, point of view, and approach are what inform his paintings.

Frank H. Netter died in 1991.
