Review

An excellent book for students and scholars who want to get into the analysis of social networks. The authors give a great introduction to the field, but also give the reader a lot of depth to perform state-of-the-art analyses. I recommend this book to all my students because it comes with clearly defined learning outcomes and exercises. It is a great book on the analysis of social networks.

The first edition of this fine text has quickly become a leading resource for the conduct of social network research and the analysis of social network data, especially for those researchers using the UCINET software to analyse data. So it is especially valuable to see an updated second edition appearing. This is an indispensable guide for researchers in the collection, analysis and interpretation of social network data.

There are other books. About that. There are social networks. The best introduction can be found here. doing Network research. If you want to learn how to design a network study, analyze networks, and test hypotheses about social connections, this is the book for you. — Ronald Breiger Published On: 2017-07-12

This edition is even better than the first edition. The exercises at the end of each chapter make this edition a great book to teach from.

What are the things that have in common? All of them are transmitted through a network. This is the beginning of thinking about how all networks share the same properties. Phrases like networks are everywhere are getting passe for me. The book provides a framework for the many different kinds of social networks available to the researcher. The authors help us understand which differences matter, how to analyse them and how to make sense of the results. It’s easy to be sold on the power of network analysis, but it’s hard to know which analysis to do and why. There is a text that is as conceptually rich as it is methodologically generous.
